Yard events generate some of the most objective, timestamp-driven data available about carrier performance, yet many carrier scorecard programs rely on self-reported or dispatch-level data that misses what actually happened at the dock. Connecting yard management timestamps directly to carrier scorecards closes this gap and gives both shippers and carriers a shared, defensible view of on-time performance.
A carrier scorecard built only from appointment data can only say whether a carrier was scheduled on time — it cannot say whether the truck actually arrived within its window, how long it waited before getting a door, or how long loading or unloading took once it started. The yard captures each of these events independently: gate check-in time, door assignment time, load start, load complete, and gate check-out. Feeding these into the scorecard turns a single appointment-compliance metric into a fuller performance picture.

A scorecard that penalizes carriers for total dwell time without distinguishing cause is unfair and eventually damages carrier relationships, since long dwell is frequently the facility's fault — no door available, staffing shortfall, paperwork delay — not the driver's. Yard timestamps make this distinction possible: time from gate check-in to door assignment is largely a facility metric, while time from door assignment to load completion reflects carrier and driver factors more directly. Scorecards that blend these without separating them produce misleading carrier rankings.
Carrier scorecards work best as a two-way conversation rather than a one-sided grading exercise. Giving carriers access to the underlying yard timestamps behind their score — not just a final grade — lets them verify accuracy, dispute facility-caused delays being counted against them, and identify their own drivers or routes that consistently underperform.
Once yard-based performance data accumulates over enough loads, it becomes a legitimate input into carrier allocation decisions — routing more volume to carriers with strong on-time and low-detention histories, and addressing chronic problems with underperforming carriers before they escalate into service failures. This turns the yard from a pure execution function into a data source that informs procurement and carrier management decisions.
Most facilities do not need a purpose-built scorecard platform to start — exporting yard timestamp data on a regular schedule into a simple spreadsheet-based scorecard, segmented by the delay-attribution categories above, delivers most of the value before investing in a more automated integration.
