Empty containers do not generate revenue while they sit, yet they consume the same yard space, handling equipment, and administrative attention as loaded ones. Managing where empties are stored, when they move, and which booking they are released against is a distinct discipline within yard management — one that directly affects a terminal's or depot's ability to serve upcoming export bookings.

The Empty Container Problem

Global trade imbalances mean containers frequently arrive full at import-heavy regions and must travel empty back to export-heavy regions, or sit in depot yards waiting for the next outbound booking. An empty is not "nothing" from a yard management standpoint — it still occupies a slot, still needs to be tracked by owner (the container may belong to a specific shipping line), condition status, and size/type, and still needs to be findable quickly when an export booking needs a matching unit.

Matching Empties to Bookings by Type and Owner

The core yard task is matching available empty inventory against upcoming demand. This match has to account for several attributes simultaneously:

  • Size and type — 20ft vs 40ft, standard vs high-cube, dry van vs reefer vs open-top, since a booking usually specifies an exact equipment type.
  • Ownership / lessor — many empties are line-owned or leased, and a depot may only be authorized to release certain owners' units against certain bookings, governed by interchange agreements.
  • Condition grade — units flagged for repair cannot be released until cleared, so condition status has to be visible at the moment of allocation, not discovered at the gate.

Depot vs Yard Storage and Interchange Rules

Empties may sit in a carrier's own terminal yard, at an off-dock container depot, or at a customer's facility awaiting return. Each location type carries different interchange rules — who is liable for the unit, what free time applies before storage or per-diem charges start, and what documentation (equipment interchange receipt) is required at handoff. Yard management systems that span depot operations need to track these interchange events with the same rigor as gate transactions, since disputes over per-diem and detention charges are frequently resolved by referring back to interchange timestamps.

Repositioning Decisions: Store, Move, or Return

When an empty is not immediately needed at its current location, the yard or fleet planning function has to decide whether to hold it in place (betting on local demand), reposition it to another depot with a booking need, or return it to the shipping line's designated empty return point. This decision balances local storage cost, trucking cost to reposition, and the line's own repositioning instructions, which are often communicated through EDI or API feeds into the yard system.
