Yard jockeys, also called spotters or hostlers, are the drivers responsible for physically moving trailers around the yard — pulling them from parking spots to dock doors, repositioning empties, and staging inbound loads. A YMS turns their work from a stream of radio requests into a managed, prioritized queue of digital tasks, which is often the difference between a smooth-running yard and constant scrambling.

What a Jockey's Shift Actually Looks Like

A jockey drives a specialized terminal tractor (a yard truck without a full cab, built for short, repetitive hookups) between the yard and the dock doors all shift long. Each move typically involves connecting to a trailer, pulling it to its destination spot or door, and disconnecting — a cycle that, in a busy facility, might repeat forty or more times per shift. Without a system directing this work, jockeys either wait for radio instructions from a supervisor or make their own judgment calls about what to move next, which can easily miss the truly urgent moves.

A YMS move-management module converts scheduling and priority data into a specific instruction: pick up trailer X from spot Y, deliver it to door Z, by time T. These instructions typically appear on an in-cab tablet or handheld device, are automatically prioritized (a trailer approaching its detention deadline outranks a routine reshuffle), and are confirmed by the jockey scanning the trailer at pickup and drop-off to close the loop with real-time location data.

Prioritization Logic

Not every move carries the same urgency, and a good YMS encodes that into the queue automatically rather than leaving it to a supervisor's memory. Trailers close to a dock appointment window take priority over general repositioning. A trailer approaching a detention-charge deadline jumps ahead of routine moves. An empty trailer needed for an outbound load that's about to be staged gets pulled before an empty sitting in overflow parking that isn't needed yet. This logic prevents the common failure mode where jockeys stay busy all shift but somehow the truly time-sensitive moves are the ones that get delayed.

Measuring Jockey Productivity

Because every move is time-stamped from assignment to completion, a YMS naturally produces jockey productivity metrics: moves completed per hour, average time per move, and idle time between assignments. These numbers help staffing decisions — is the current headcount enough to keep up with dock demand — and can also surface training needs if one jockey's average move time is consistently outside the norm.

Safety Considerations Specific to Jockeying

Jockeying is repetitive, fast-paced work in a confined space shared with pedestrians, forklifts, and other trucks, which makes it one of the higher-risk roles in yard operations. Systems that reduce radio chatter and ambiguous instructions indirectly improve safety by cutting down on rushed, confused maneuvers. Many facilities pair digital task management with strict speed limits, mandatory spotter use for blind-side backing, and geofenced zones that flag a jockey if they enter an area not authorized for through-traffic.
