EPC (Electronic Product Code) Standard
The EPC (Electronic Product Code) is a standardized numbering scheme designed to give every individual physical object a globally unique identifier, extending the same logic behind the familiar UPC barcode but with far more capacity and structure. Where a UPC barcode identifies a product type ("this is a 500ml bottle of shampoo, brand X"), an EPC can identify one specific unit of that product, distinguishing it from every other bottle ever made — the foundation that makes item-level RFID tracking meaningful.
Traditional barcodes were built around identifying a product category or SKU, not an individual unit — every can of a particular soft drink carries the same barcode. The EPC standard, developed and maintained under the GS1 organization (the same body responsible for the UPC/EAN barcode standards), was designed specifically to extend that identification down to the level of one specific physical item, adding a serial number component that traditional barcodes lack.
An EPC is typically encoded as a 96-bit (or sometimes 64- or 198-bit) number divided into several fields that together create a globally unique identifier without requiring a central database lookup just to confirm uniqueness.
- Header: identifies which EPC encoding scheme is being used
- Company prefix: a GS1-assigned number unique to the manufacturer or brand owner
- Object class: equivalent to a product's SKU or item number, similar to what a UPC already encodes
- Serial number: the unique identifier for this one specific physical unit, the piece that goes beyond what a barcode can express
Assigning a unique number to every item is only half the value; the other half is sharing what happened to that item as it moves through a supply chain. The EPC Information Services (EPCIS) standard defines a common format for recording and exchanging "what, when, where, and why" events tied to an EPC — for example, "this specific item was shipped from this location at this time for this business reason." This lets trading partners exchange traceability data using a shared vocabulary, without needing custom integration for every partner relationship.
Without a shared standard, every company would need its own proprietary numbering scheme, and any two-party exchange of tracking data would require custom mapping between incompatible identifiers. Because EPC numbers are structured around GS1 company prefixes, a manufacturer's EPC-tagged item can be recognized and correctly interpreted by any retailer, logistics provider, or system anywhere in the world that also follows the standard, without prior coordination between the two parties.
EPC underpins virtually all modern item-level and case-level RFID deployments in retail and logistics, since the encoding scheme is what actually gets written onto the UHF Gen2 tags used in those environments. It supports serialized traceability for pharmaceutical anti-counterfeiting programs, enables precise recall scoping down to individual units rather than broad lot estimates, and provides the common identifier layer that lets a product be tracked consistently from factory to store shelf across multiple companies' separate systems.
