RFID for Laundry and Textile Tracking
Industrial laundries, hotel linen services, and workwear rental operators lose a significant share of their inventory every year to misrouted or missing textiles. Sewn-in RFID transponders built to survive hundreds of wash-and-dry cycles let operators track each garment individually from the moment it enters circulation until it is retired.
Standard adhesive RFID labels cannot survive industrial laundering: water, high heat, steam pressing, and mechanical agitation destroy paper-faced inlays within a few cycles. Laundry RFID uses tags built specifically for this environment, typically a chip and antenna encapsulated in a small silicone, polyester, or PPS (polyphenylene sulfide) button or flag that is heat-sealed or sewn into a seam.
These tags are rated for hundreds of industrial wash cycles at temperatures that can exceed 85°C, along with dry cleaning solvents, tumble drying, and ironing presses. A garment tagged at manufacture, or during first intake at the laundry, keeps the same unique identity for its entire service life.
A typical textile tracking cycle uses fixed tunnel readers or handheld readers at several checkpoints:
- Soiled linen intake — bulk read of a cart or bag as it enters the sorting area
- Sort and wash batching — items grouped by client, garment type, or wash program
- Post-wash count — verifying that everything that went in also came out
- Client delivery — matching outbound counts to the contracted quantity per site
- Garment retirement — flagging items that have exceeded their wash-cycle threshold
Because dozens or hundreds of tagged items can sit in a single cart, bulk RFID reads at a tunnel portal replace what would otherwise be a slow, error-prone manual count.
Rental linen and workwear programs are usually billed per garment per cycle or on a subscription basis tied to inventory levels. Without item-level tracking, laundries and their clients often disagree about how many garments were actually delivered, lost, or damaged. A unique tag ID per garment, logged automatically at each checkpoint, produces an audit trail that resolves these disputes with data rather than estimates.
The same identity data supports shrinkage analysis: which departments, routes, or client sites show abnormal loss rates, and whether losses correlate with a particular garment type or wash program that may be too aggressive.
Because each tag persists for the life of the garment, laundries can log a wash-cycle counter against every item. This supports proactive replacement before a garment becomes visibly worn, and it lets operators size and plan textile pools more accurately based on actual attrition rates rather than rough estimates.
For garments requiring inspection — flame-resistant workwear, cleanroom garments, or hospital linens with regulatory requirements — the tag ID also links to inspection and certification records, so a single scan confirms whether an item is still within its compliance window.
Textile RFID data typically feeds a laundry management system rather than a general WMS, but for operations that also warehouse finished garments or rental stock before distribution, the same tag IDs can be read into standard warehouse receiving and putaway processes, giving a single identifier from manufacture through years of reuse.
