Item-Level RFID for Loss Prevention and Anti-Theft
Retail shrinkage from theft, both external and internal, remains one of the largest unrecovered costs in the industry. Item-level RFID gives loss prevention teams a level of granularity that older electronic article surveillance systems could never provide: not just an alarm at the door, but a record of exactly which item left and when.
Traditional electronic article surveillance uses a simple magnetic or acousto-magnetic strip that triggers a gate alarm if not deactivated at checkout, but it tells staff nothing about which specific item caused the alert. Item-level RFID tags, by contrast, carry a unique identity, so an exit alarm can be paired with the exact product record — a specific SKU, size, and even the individual unit — giving staff actionable information instead of a generic beep.
With item-level RFID inventory counts run frequently and accurately, discrepancies between expected and actual stock become visible much faster than with periodic manual counts. A sudden drop in a specific SKU's count, isolated to a particular store or time window, can point loss prevention teams toward a specific incident rather than a vague quarterly shrinkage number that offers no investigative starting point.
Because RFID makes frequent, accurate cycle counts practical, discrepancies at the stockroom, backroom transfer, or point-of-sale void level become easier to correlate with specific shifts or employees when combined with time-stamped access logs — without singling anyone out unfairly, it gives loss prevention a data-driven starting point instead of relying purely on suspicion.

Combining RFID exit alerts with camera-based verification at the gate is a common approach to reduce false positives before escalating to a stop-and-check interaction with a customer.
