GS1 Digital Link and 2D Barcodes for Retail

Retail is in the middle of a multi-year transition from the familiar linear barcode to 2D barcodes carrying a web-linked data structure, allowing the same symbol scanned at checkout to also open rich product information for a shopper's phone. GS1 Digital Link is the standard making that dual-purpose scan possible.

The Limitation of the Classic Linear Barcode

A traditional linear barcode at a retail point of sale typically encodes only a product identifier — enough for the register to look up price and description in a database, but nothing more. It cannot carry a batch number, expiry date, or a link to additional content without a completely separate label or code, which is why many products already carry two or three different codes side by side for different purposes.

What GS1 Digital Link Adds

GS1 Digital Link defines a way to encode a standard product identifier as a web URL structure within a 2D barcode, so the same code that a point-of-sale scanner reads as a product identifier can also be scanned by a consumer's smartphone camera to open a web page with extended product information, without needing a separate QR code alongside the traditional barcode.

Because the underlying identifier follows the same GS1 numbering system already used in traditional barcodes, existing product master data and backend systems do not need to be rebuilt — the 2D barcode is a richer container for the same core identity, plus optional additional data elements like batch, expiry, or serial number when needed.

Transition Challenges

Retailers must upgrade point-of-sale scanning hardware and software to read 2D symbols reliably, since many older linear-only scanners cannot decode a 2D barcode at all. This is a significant, industry-wide infrastructure transition happening gradually, with most major retail barcode standards bodies coordinating a shared migration timeline rather than leaving individual retailers to convert independently and create fragmentation.

Relationship to Existing AIDC Standards

GS1 Digital Link builds directly on the same GS1 identification standards already used for GTINs and other product identifiers, extending them into a web-resolvable format rather than replacing the underlying numbering system. It complements, rather than competes with, RFID-based serialization approaches used elsewhere in the supply chain.
