Intermodal Transportation
Intermodal transportation moves freight using two or more transport modes — typically ship, rail, and truck — while the cargo stays inside the same sealed container for the entire journey. The goods are never directly handled between modes; only the container is transferred, which is what distinguishes intermodal from ordinary multi-leg shipping.
A typical long-distance intermodal shipment starts with a container being loaded and sealed at the origin (often a factory or a port of export), trucked a short "drayage" distance to a rail ramp or port, moved by rail or ship across the long-haul distance, then trucked again from the destination rail ramp or port to the final delivery point. Only the first and last legs use trucks; the majority of the distance is covered by rail or ocean vessel, which are far cheaper and more fuel-efficient per ton-mile than trucking alone.
Intermodal is typically 10-30% cheaper than over-the-road trucking for the same distance, mainly because rail moves far more weight per unit of fuel and one train replaces dozens of trucks on the long-haul segment. The trade-off is transit time: intermodal is generally slower than dedicated truckload service because of the extra handoffs at rail ramps and scheduled train departures rather than continuous door-to-door driving. It also introduces more variables that can cause delay — rail network congestion, port dwell time, and drayage capacity at either end.
- Long-haul, non-urgent freight — shipments with lead time to spare where cost savings outweigh a few extra days in transit
- High-volume, repeatable lanes — steady freight volume between the same origin-destination pairs justifies the fixed handling steps
- International ocean freight — nearly all transoceanic container shipping is intermodal by definition, since ocean vessel plus inland rail or truck is the only practical way to move a container from a foreign factory to an inland destination
- Sustainability-driven shipping — rail's lower carbon footprint per ton-mile makes intermodal attractive for companies tracking transportation emissions
Because a container passes through multiple handling parties — a trucking drayage company, a rail carrier, a port or ramp operator, and often a second trucking company — visibility gaps are common. A container can go dark for hours or days between handoffs if tracking data is not shared consistently across every party in the chain. Damage or loss disputes are also harder to resolve because multiple parties touched the container, making it important to document condition and seal integrity at every handoff point.
Every intermodal container carries a standardized ISO 6346 container number and a tamper-evident seal, both of which need to be scanned and logged at each handoff to maintain a clean chain of custody. A missing or unscanned handoff record is often the difference between a quickly resolved discrepancy and a lengthy claims investigation. Barcode and RFID-based container tracking systems, increasingly paired with GPS-enabled seals, are what let shippers see a container's real-time location and status across rail, ocean, and trucking legs instead of relying on periodic manual status updates from each carrier.
