What is Logistics? Introduction
Logistics is the discipline of planning, executing, and controlling the movement and storage of goods, information, and resources from point of origin to point of consumption. It is the operational backbone that turns a purchase order into a package on someone's doorstep, and it touches every physical product a business ever sells.
At its core, logistics coordinates five interdependent activities: transportation, warehousing, inventory management, order fulfillment, and information flow. None of these work in isolation — a warehouse that stores goods perfectly but cannot get them onto a truck on time has failed just as surely as one with no stock at all. Modern logistics treats these as one continuous system rather than separate departments.
- Transportation — moving goods between facilities, suppliers, and customers via road, rail, air, or sea
- Warehousing — storing inventory safely and making it retrievable on demand
- Inventory management — balancing stock levels against demand to avoid both stockouts and excess carrying cost
- Order fulfillment — picking, packing, and shipping customer orders accurately and on time
- Information flow — tracking data (barcodes, RFID, EDI, ERP records) that lets every other function make decisions
A useful way to picture logistics is as two parallel flows moving through the same network: physical goods flow "downstream" from raw material suppliers toward the end customer, while information flows in both directions, feeding forecasts, replenishment triggers, and shipment visibility back upstream. A barcode scan at receiving, for example, is a small event that updates inventory records, triggers put-away instructions, and eventually informs purchasing decisions weeks later.
For most companies logistics represents a significant share of total operating cost — commonly cited industry ranges put total logistics cost (transportation, warehousing, inventory carrying cost, and administration) at anywhere from 8% to 15% of revenue depending on sector, with distance-sensitive or low-margin goods sitting at the higher end. Because the cost base is so large, even small efficiency gains — a better pick path, a tighter delivery route, a more accurate demand forecast — produce outsized returns.
At the same time, logistics performance is increasingly a customer-facing differentiator rather than a purely internal cost center. Delivery speed, order accuracy, and shipment visibility now shape purchasing decisions directly, especially in e-commerce, making logistics a strategic function rather than a back-office one.
None of this coordination works without reliable identification of goods at every touchpoint. Barcodes, GS1 standards, and increasingly RFID are what make it possible to know, in real time, which item is where, in what quantity, and in what condition. A logistics operation without accurate identification data is effectively operating blind — it can move boxes, but it cannot reliably know what is inside them or where they are at any given moment.
