WMS for Furniture and Oversized Goods
Furniture and other oversized, bulky items break most of the assumptions built into a conventional small-parcel WMS: single-unit-per-bin location logic stops working, standard cartonization doesn't apply, and a single order might require two people and a piece of material handling equipment just to move it a few meters.
A location holding small parts can be sized by counting how many units fit; a location holding sofas or wardrobes needs capacity modeled by cubic volume and physical footprint, since a single item may occupy an entire bay. The WMS needs location capacity rules that account for irregular shapes and non-stackable items, and putaway logic that treats "does this fit" as a genuine spatial calculation rather than a simple quantity check.
Furniture is often stocked in knocked-down, flat-pack form to save storage volume and shipping cost, with the same SKU sometimes also existing as a pre-assembled floor or showroom sample. The WMS needs to distinguish these as related but distinct inventory records, since they have different storage footprints, different handling requirements, and sometimes different sale channels (flat-pack for standard delivery, assembled for local pickup or white-glove service).
Large furniture items are prone to damage from improper lifting, stacking, or transport, and unlike a small parcel, a damaged large item can be expensive to return, repair, or write off. The WMS should support item-level handling instructions, this side up, do not stack, requires two-person lift, surfaced at pick and load time, not buried in a separate manual that warehouse staff rarely consult under time pressure.
Oversized goods frequently require scheduled delivery appointments rather than standard parcel drop-off, sometimes with white-glove service including in-home placement and packaging removal. This creates a tighter coupling between the WMS and a delivery-scheduling or transportation management function than typical parcel fulfillment needs, since a pick and pack that isn't ready in time for its scheduled delivery slot creates a customer-facing failure, not just an internal delay.
Returning an oversized item is materially more expensive and logistically complex than a small parcel return, often requiring a scheduled pickup rather than a drop-box. The WMS needs a returns workflow that accounts for this cost difference, sometimes routing a damaged large item to local disposition (repair, liquidate, donate) rather than shipping it back to a central return center, since the transportation cost alone can exceed the item's residual value.
