Drayage — the short-haul movement of containers between ports, rail ramps, and nearby warehouses — is one of the most operationally fragile links in an international supply chain. A TMS that manages drayage needs to coordinate container availability, chassis logistics, and appointment windows that are largely outside the shipper's direct control.

Why Drayage Is Different from Line-Haul Trucking

A drayage move is typically short in distance but complicated in coordination: the container must be picked up from a marine terminal or rail ramp within a specific window, often requires a compatible chassis that may be supplied by a different party than the trucking company, and is subject to per diem and detention charges if the container is not returned empty within an allotted free time. Unlike a standard truckload move where the shipper controls loading and departure timing, drayage timing is heavily dictated by terminal operating hours, appointment systems, and vessel or rail schedules that a TMS cannot control but must plan around.

Coordinating with Limited Visibility

Terminal congestion, vessel delays, and chassis shortages are largely outside a shipper's control, which means a drayage TMS module functions less as a route optimizer and more as a coordination and exception-management tool. Its value lies in surfacing which containers are at risk of missing their free time window, which appointments have been confirmed versus still pending, and which drayage providers have available capacity on short notice when a plan changes.

Cost Control Through Timing

Per diem and detention charges accumulate quickly once free time expires, and at a busy port these charges can exceed the cost of the drayage move itself. A TMS that surfaces free-time deadlines prominently, ideally ranked by urgency across all active containers, gives a drayage coordinator the visibility needed to prioritize which containers to move first rather than discovering a charge after the fact on an invoice.

Integration with the Broader Move

Drayage rarely stands alone — it is usually the first or last leg of an ocean or rail shipment that continues on to a distribution center. A TMS that treats drayage as a connected leg, rather than an isolated local move, can flag downstream appointment conflicts early, for example when a delayed drayage pickup threatens a warehouse's scheduled receiving appointment later the same day.
