Voice picking directs warehouse workers through tasks using spoken instructions delivered via a headset, with the worker confirming actions by speaking back rather than pressing buttons or reading a screen. It frees the hands and eyes entirely, making it one of the most ergonomic semi-automation technologies for manual picking operations.

How Voice Picking Works

A worker wears a headset connected to a small wearable computer or a phone-based device. The system, integrated with the WMS, speaks the next task — typically a location and quantity — and the worker navigates there, retrieves the item, and speaks a confirmation, often a check-digit associated with that location to verify they are in the correct spot. Voice recognition software interprets the spoken confirmation and advances to the next task. Some systems combine voice with a wrist-mounted scanner for barcode verification alongside spoken confirmation.

It is often combined with pick-to-light in a hybrid model — voice for wide-ranging travel-based picking, light modules for high-density fixed zones.

Considerations Before Adopting

Voice systems require accurate, well-maintained location and item master data, since the entire interaction depends on the system speaking correct information. Background noise levels, accents, and headset comfort over long shifts also affect adoption success, so a pilot with real operators in real conditions is more informative than a vendor demo alone.
