Proof of Delivery is not one uniform process — what counts as adequate evidence for a parcel dropped on a doorstep looks very different from what a freight carrier needs to close out a multi-pallet LTL shipment. Understanding these differences matters when choosing or configuring a POD system.

Last-Mile Parcel Delivery

Last-mile delivery is high-volume and low-value-per-stop: a single driver may complete over a hundred stops in a shift, each taking seconds. POD here is optimized for speed and simplicity — a single photo, a quick signature, or in many contactless cases, no signature at all beyond a doorstep photo and GPS confirmation. Because each individual parcel carries relatively low value, the cost of an exhaustive verification process at every stop would outweigh the risk it prevents.

Freight and LTL Delivery

POD here is inspection-heavy: the receiving party typically counts pallets, checks for visible damage, and may note shortages or overages directly on the BOL before signing.

Why the Same POD App Rarely Fits Both

A driver app tuned for high-speed parcel drop-offs typically lacks the structured item-count and discrepancy-logging workflows freight receivers need, while a freight-grade POD workflow would be far too slow for a residential parcel route. Companies operating both models — common among logistics providers with mixed fleets — usually run separate app configurations or entirely separate systems tuned to each use case, unified only at the reporting layer.

Shared Principles Despite the Differences

Regardless of shipment size, both models share the same underlying goals: an identifiable receiver, a timestamp, a location, and documented condition at handoff. The difference is depth and granularity, not purpose. Recognizing which model a given operation needs — and not over-engineering a lightweight parcel flow with freight-level detail, or under-specifying a freight flow with parcel-level shortcuts — is the central design decision in any POD rollout.
