Field service and installation orders extend the OMS beyond shipping a box to a customer's door into scheduling a person's time and skill set to physically deliver, assemble, or install a product on site. This category of order behaves less like retail fulfillment and more like appointment-based service dispatch layered on top of a physical goods order.

Why This Order Type Does Not Fit the Standard Model

A furniture delivery with assembly, an appliance installation, or a solar panel setup all share a trait that breaks the typical ship-and-forget order flow: the order is not complete when the product leaves the warehouse, it is complete when a qualified technician has finished a job at the customer's location, at a time the customer agreed to. The OMS has to track two parallel threads for the same order — the physical goods movement and the service appointment — and only close the order out once both are confirmed complete.

  • Scheduled appointment window, often negotiated directly with the customer rather than system-generated automatically
  • Technician or crew assignment, including required skill certifications or equipment for the specific job type
  • Site readiness requirements, such as measurements, access constraints, or pre-installation prerequisites the customer must satisfy
  • Coordination between the goods arriving at the site and the technician's arrival, since installation cannot happen before the product does
  • Post-installation confirmation, often requiring a signature or photo evidence similar to proof of delivery, but tied to completed service work rather than just a dropped-off package

Integrating With Field Service Scheduling Systems

Most businesses running installation-heavy order flows use a dedicated field service management platform to handle technician scheduling, skill matching, and route optimization, rather than building this logic natively into the OMS. This means the OMS needs a tight, bidirectional integration: pushing the order and delivery details to the field service system when an appointment needs to be scheduled, and receiving back appointment confirmations, technician status updates, and completion evidence to keep the customer-facing order status accurate.

Handling Delays and Rescheduling

Installation appointments get rescheduled far more often than standard shipments — customer availability changes, a technician calls in sick, or a required part is missing on-site. The OMS needs to represent this without treating every reschedule as an exception requiring manual intervention, and it needs to communicate revised timing to the customer clearly, since an installation appointment carries a much higher expectation of a specific time commitment than a general shipping window.

Revenue Recognition Tied to Completion

Because the value delivered to the customer is not complete until installation finishes, revenue recognition for these orders often cannot follow the same rule used for standard shipped goods. Finance teams typically need the OMS to distinguish between "goods delivered" and "service completed" as separate milestones, so revenue booking aligns with when the customer actually received full value rather than when a box left the warehouse.
