A distinguishing operational feature of correctional visitor systems is mandatory exit verification, not just entry verification. The same biometric check performed at entry is repeated at exit, and the system confirms the count and identity of everyone who entered matches everyone who leaves. This closes a specific vulnerability where an inmate might attempt to leave disguised as, or in place of, a visitor. Facilities typically pair this with headcount reconciliation against visitation logs before any exit gate opens.

Modality Choice and Practical Constraints

Fingerprint remains the most common modality for correctional visitor systems because of low hardware cost, fast capture, and decades of law-enforcement familiarity with the modality for identity resolution. Facial recognition is increasingly used as a secondary or queue-management layer, particularly for verifying that the person approaching the gate matches the appointment record before a visitor even reaches the fingerprint station, reducing bottlenecks. Iris recognition is used in some higher-security facilities because it offers fast, contactless capture and is well suited to high visitor throughput, though hardware cost is generally higher than fingerprint.

Data Governance Considerations

Because visitors are not incarcerated individuals and often have no independent relationship with the justice system, retention policy is a sensitive design point. Well-run programs define clear rules for how long visitor biometric data is retained after the associated inmate is released or transferred, restrict use of the data strictly to facility access purposes, and provide a documented process for a visitor to request deletion after they have no further need to visit. Sharing visitor biometric data across unrelated law-enforcement databases without a clear legal basis is one of the most common criticisms leveled at poorly designed correctional biometric programs.
