Automotive Just-in-Sequence Yard Coordination
Automotive plants run on just-in-sequence (JIS) inbound logistics, where parts must arrive at the line not just on time but in the exact build order of the vehicles being assembled. A Yard Management System built for this environment treats the yard as the last controllable buffer before a missed sequence becomes a stopped line.
In a typical distribution yard, a trailer arriving an hour late is an inconvenience. In a JIS automotive yard, a trailer arriving out of sequence can force a costly line stoppage or an expensive re-sequencing operation at the dock. The YMS therefore does not just track trailers — it tracks the relationship between each trailer's contents and the current build sequence running on the assembly line.
This requires tight integration with the plant's sequencing system so the yard always knows which parts the line will need next, and in what order trailers must be pulled to the dock to preserve that order.
Rather than staging trailers by arrival time or carrier, a JIS-aware YMS stages them by sequence position. Key behaviors include:
- Assigning yard slots based on the part family's position in the upcoming build schedule, not simply on a first-come basis
- Flagging sequence-breaking trailers immediately on gate check-in so exception handling starts before the trailer is even parked
- Coordinating spotter moves so trailers are pulled to the dock in the order the line consumes them, not the order they physically arrived
- Maintaining a rolling buffer window (commonly a few hours of supply) so minor delays can be absorbed without touching the line
A sequence break — a trailer that is missing, delayed, or containing the wrong parts for its assigned position — is the single most disruptive event a JIS yard can face. The YMS should surface these breaks the moment they are detectable, whether from a gate check-in mismatch, an ASN discrepancy, or a spotter reporting a trailer that cannot be located. Automated alerts to the plant's material control team allow a substitution plan or a controlled line-speed adjustment to be triggered before the shortage reaches the line.
Because sequence timing is measured in minutes rather than hours, spotter dispatch in a JIS yard needs to be prioritized dynamically. The system should re-rank pending yard moves whenever the sequence shifts, ensuring the spotter fleet is always working on the move that protects the nearest upcoming line requirement.
Traditional yard KPIs like dwell time are secondary here. The metrics that matter most are sequence accuracy (percentage of trailers pulled in correct build order), break frequency, and average time-to-detect for a sequence break. Tracking these over time shows whether the yard is a reliable partner to the line or a recurring source of production risk.
