A yard jockey or spotter moving trailers between parking spots, dock doors, and staging lanes works from the cab of a yard tractor, not a desk — which means the device carrying their instructions has to survive that environment and deliver information in seconds, not through a multi-step desktop interface designed for an office.
Before rugged tablets and handheld scanners became standard yard equipment, spotters typically worked from a printed move list handed out at shift start, or radioed a dispatcher for each new instruction. Both approaches introduce delay between when a move becomes necessary — a dock frees up, a trailer needs repositioning for an outbound load — and when the spotter actually receives that instruction. Yard equipment operates outdoors in all weather, with vibration, dust, glare, and gloved hands as constant factors. Devices deployed to spotters need sunlight-readable screens, glove-compatible touch input, drop and vibration resistance rated for vehicle mounting, and battery life covering a full shift without a mid-day charging interruption that pulls the tractor out of service. A consumer tablet that works fine in an office frequently fails within weeks in this environment, making device selection a real operational decision rather than a minor IT choice.
Many yard tablets integrate or pair with a barcode or RFID scanner so a spotter can confirm a trailer or container identity without leaving the cab — scanning a windshield-mounted tag or a chassis-mounted RFID tag as they approach, rather than walking around the unit to read a printed number. This both speeds the move and reduces the error of hooking the wrong trailer, which is a costly mistake when it sends the wrong load to a dock expecting something else.
Large yards often have inconsistent Wi-Fi coverage at the far edges of the lot, and a spotter tablet that simply freezes when it loses signal creates more disruption than the paper list it replaced. Practical deployments cache the current move queue locally and queue confirmations to sync once connectivity returns, so a temporary dead zone in the yard does not stop operations — a design point that mirrors offline-first patterns used elsewhere in warehouse mobile applications.
