Weather & Safety Considerations in Yard Operations
The yard is one of the more hazardous parts of a distribution operation — moving trailers, tractors, pedestrians, and yard trucks share the same open space, often in poor visibility or weather conditions that a climate-controlled warehouse interior never has to deal with. A deliberate safety program, adjusted for seasonal weather, is what keeps that mix from turning into an incident.
Most yard incidents involve a vehicle striking a pedestrian, a trailer, or a fixed structure, or a person falling while coupling/uncoupling or checking a trailer. Physical separation of pedestrian paths from vehicle travel lanes, high-visibility marking of walkways, and mandatory high-visibility clothing for anyone on foot in the yard reduce the most common incident type significantly. Wheel chocks and trailer restraint systems (mechanical locks or interlocks with the dock leveler) prevent the specific and serious hazard of a trailer creeping away from the dock while a forklift is inside it.

Reduced visibility in fog, heavy rain, or snow increases the risk of a vehicle-pedestrian or vehicle-vehicle incident, especially at blind corners around parked trailers.
Cold weather also affects dock plate and leveler mechanics, which can stick or fail to seat properly when icy, creating a fall or trailer-separation hazard right at the loading point. Heat is a hazard in its own right in summer months, particularly for yard staff spending long shifts outdoors — heat-related illness prevention (hydration breaks, shaded rest areas) belongs in the same safety program as winter ice controls.
A yard safety program should include explicit weather triggers that change operations — not left to individual supervisor judgment in the moment. Common triggers include reducing yard speed limits during snow or ice, halting outdoor coupling/uncoupling work during lightning, and pausing automated yard vehicle operation during heavy fog or snow if their sensors are not rated for that visibility. Documenting these triggers in advance, with clear authority for who calls the hold and who calls the resume, avoids the ambiguity that leads to unsafe judgment calls under pressure.
Near-miss reporting is the leading indicator that matters most in yard safety — most serious incidents are preceded by several near-misses of the same type that went unreported. A simple, low-friction reporting channel (a phone-accessible form, a supervisor radio call logged centrally) and a genuinely non-punitive response to reports encourages staff to flag hazards before they cause injury. Combine this with recurring refresher training tied to the season — winter driving and footing hazards reviewed each fall, heat safety reviewed each spring — rather than a single annual session disconnected from the actual conditions staff are about to face.
