WMS Voice-Directed Putaway: Beyond Voice Picking
Voice-directed putaway applies the same hands-free, eyes-up voice technology long used in picking to the inbound side of the warehouse. Rather than guiding a worker to retrieve items, the system guides them to store received inventory in the correct location — a distinct workflow with its own logic and its own payoff.
Voice picking confirms that a worker took the right item from a known location. Voice putaway solves a different problem: given a pallet or case that just arrived, where should it go, and how does the system confirm it actually got there? The worker scans or speaks the license plate of the incoming unit, and the voice system reads back a directed location chosen by the WMS's putaway logic — often based on velocity zone, available capacity, or slotting rules. The worker travels there, speaks or scans a location check digit to confirm arrival, and the transaction closes only when both identifiers match.
Left to their own judgment, warehouse workers tend to put inventory wherever is closest and empty, which erodes any slotting strategy over time and creates split locations for the same SKU scattered across the building. Voice-directed putaway enforces the WMS's placement logic in real time, at the moment of highest compliance risk, without requiring the worker to read a screen or a printed list. This is particularly valuable in cold storage or heavy-glove environments where handling a handheld scanner screen is awkward.
The value of voice-directed putaway is only as good as the location assignment logic behind it. A WMS needs live visibility into remaining capacity per location, current velocity zone assignments, and any lot or expiration segregation rules before it can hand voice a valid location to announce. Sending a worker to a location that turns out to be full, or that already holds a conflicting lot, undermines trust in the voice system quickly, so the assignment engine must reserve the slot the instant it's suggested, not just calculate it.
Real putaway hits real problems: a suggested location is damaged, blocked, or physically inaccessible. A well-designed voice putaway flow gives the worker a simple spoken command to reject a suggested location and request an alternate, logging the reason so the location can be flagged for a facilities check. Without this exception path, workers will simply place the pallet wherever is convenient and mark the transaction complete, silently reintroducing the exact problem voice putaway was meant to eliminate.
Facilities that adopt voice-directed putaway typically track two metrics before and after: putaway cycle time per pallet and location accuracy on the next cycle count. Because voice removes the friction of reading a screen while carrying or driving equipment, cycle time improvements are often immediate, while location accuracy gains compound over weeks as split-location clutter gets slowly cleaned up by consistent, system-directed placement.
