The most defensible approach links a temperature data logger or telematics feed directly to the load record rather than storing readings in a separate system. Useful data points include:

Not every temperature excursion means the load is unsellable, but every excursion needs a documented cause and disposition decision. The TMS should support structured exception logging: duration and magnitude of the excursion, likely cause (door left open at a stop, reefer unit fault, ambient extreme), and the resulting decision (accept, reject, or hold for inspection). This turns temperature monitoring from a passive log into an active quality control gate.

Carrier Qualification for Cold Chain Lanes

Not all carriers should be tendered temperature-sensitive freight. The TMS should maintain a carrier attribute set specific to cold chain capability: reefer unit age and maintenance record, driver training on load securement and pre-cooling procedures, and historical claims rate for temperature-related rejections. Tendering logic can then automatically exclude carriers who lack a current qualification for a given commodity class.

Traceability to Origin Lot

Produce recalls move fast, and transportation records are often the first place investigators look to narrow the scope of an affected lot. Linking each shipment to the originating lot or harvest batch, and keeping temperature and routing history retrievable by lot number, materially shortens recall investigation time and can limit the scope of a recall to genuinely affected product.
