TMS Load Consolidation Across Multiple Shippers (Co-Loading)
Load consolidation across multiple shippers, often called co-loading, combines partial truckload freight from unrelated shippers into a single trailer to reach better utilization and lower per-unit cost than each shipper could achieve alone. A TMS enabling co-loading needs multi-tenant load building logic that most single-shipper routing engines were never designed to handle.
Standard LTL carriers consolidate freight as part of their normal network operation, invisible to the shipper. Co-loading, by contrast, is typically orchestrated by a shipper, 3PL, or logistics platform that actively matches complementary partial loads — for example, a shipper with freight filling 60% of a trailer paired with another shipper needing the remaining 40% on a compatible lane and delivery window. The TMS has to solve a matching problem across shippers, not just a routing problem within one shipper's freight.
Not every partial load can be combined with another. The matching logic needs to check multiple compatibility dimensions before proposing a combined load:
- Commodity compatibility (no odor transfer, no contamination risk, compatible hazmat classes if applicable)
- Overlapping or adjacent delivery windows that a single route can satisfy without excessive dwell
- Combined weight and cube within legal and trailer capacity limits
- Compatible handling requirements (temperature, stackability, fragility)
Once a co-load is built, the freight cost needs to be split between shippers in a way both parties can verify as fair, typically prorated by weight, cube, or a combination weighted toward whichever dimension actually constrained the trailer. The TMS should calculate and store this split transparently at booking time — retroactively justifying a split after delivery invites disputes and erodes trust in the consolidation program.
Co-loaded freight usually means two or more delivery stops on one route. The TMS must sequence stops correctly (loading last-delivered freight first, first-delivered freight last, using standard LIFO loading logic) and communicate a clear, stop-specific bill of lading to the driver, since a co-loaded trailer without clear per-stop documentation significantly increases the risk of misdelivery.
Each shipper's freight needs to remain independently traceable for claims and liability purposes even though it is physically combined in the same trailer. Maintaining separate bills of lading, separate proof-of-delivery captures per stop, and clear damage/shortage attribution per shipper protects all parties and keeps the co-loading model legally clean.
