A parcel driver can leave a package at the door without the recipient present. Heavy-goods delivery generally requires the customer to be home to accept the item, sign for it, and in many cases have it carried inside and set up, meaning a missed appointment window is not a minor inconvenience but a full failed delivery that must be entirely rescheduled. The TMS needs a scheduling model that treats the appointment window as a hard commitment to the customer, not an approximate delivery estimate.
Because heavy-goods delivery typically requires a two-person crew and each stop takes materially longer than a parcel drop (carrying items upstairs, unpacking, basic assembly, removing packaging), route density per crew per day is much lower than parcel routes. The TMS route planning must account for a realistic per-stop service time based on item type — a mattress delivery takes far less time than an appliance installation — rather than a flat average service time that misrepresents true route capacity.

Heavy-goods deliveries have a meaningfully higher refusal rate than parcel (damage discovered at delivery, wrong item, customer changed their mind), and each refusal requires return transportation planning for an item that does not fit standard parcel return processes. The TMS should treat a refused heavy-goods delivery as an immediate reverse logistics event, scheduling return transport rather than leaving the item without a return plan on the truck.
When delivery includes installation or assembly, the crew needs the right tools, hardware, and product-specific instructions available at time of delivery, not just the item itself. The TMS should flag installation-inclusive orders distinctly so route planning allocates appropriate service time and the crew is dispatched with confirmation that installation materials are loaded, avoiding a delivery that arrives but cannot complete the service the customer paid for.
