Omnichannel fulfillment models such as ship-from-store, buy-online-pickup-in-store (BOPIS), and curbside pickup extend an OMS beyond simple warehouse-to-door shipping. They turn every physical location into a potential fulfillment point, blurring the line between retail and logistics operations.

Ship-From-Store

Ship-from-store treats retail locations as micro-fulfillment centers. When a customer orders online and the nearest store carries the item, the OMS can route the order there instead of a distant warehouse, cutting delivery time and shipping distance. This requires store staff to perform pick, pack, and label tasks that traditionally belonged to a warehouse, and it requires the OMS to reduce that store's sellable inventory the instant the order is allocated so a shopper in the store cannot buy the same reserved unit off the shelf.

BOPIS and Curbside

Buy-online-pickup-in-store keeps the transaction online but has the customer collect the item in person, eliminating the last-mile shipping cost and delivery wait entirely. Curbside pickup is a variant where staff bring the order to the customer's vehicle rather than requiring them to enter the store. Both models depend on tight timing: the OMS must notify the store the moment an order is placed, track the picking and staging process, and alert the customer only when the item is physically ready — a false "ready for pickup" notification is one of the most damaging omnichannel failures because it sends a customer to the store for nothing.

Why This Is Hard for the OMS
  • Store inventory accuracy is typically lower than warehouse accuracy, since counts are less frequent and shrinkage is harder to track
  • Staff performing fulfillment tasks are often not dedicated logistics workers, so the OMS/POS workflow must be simple enough for occasional users
  • Store hours and staffing constrain when fulfillment can actually happen, which the OMS must factor into promised timing
  • Returns of BOPIS orders often happen in-store, requiring the OMS to reconcile an online order against an in-store return transaction
Barcode Scanning as the Accuracy Backbone

Because store fulfillment lacks the structured bin locations of a warehouse, barcode scanning at pick and pickup confirmation becomes the primary safeguard against errors — confirming the exact item and quantity handed over matches the order, and closing the loop back to the OMS in real time. Without this scan-based confirmation, omnichannel fulfillment accuracy tends to degrade quickly as volume grows.

Business Rationale

Despite the operational complexity, these models are attractive because they reduce delivery cost, offer same-day gratification, and drive additional store foot traffic (a meaningful share of BOPIS customers make an unplanned additional purchase while in the store). The OMS is what makes the economics work by ensuring the right inventory is visible, reserved, and tracked precisely enough to support the promise.
