Collaborative Robots (Cobots) in Warehouses
Collaborative robots, or cobots, are robotic arms designed to work safely alongside human workers without the safety cages traditionally required for industrial robots. In warehousing, cobots are increasingly used for tasks like palletizing, item picking assistance, and packing support in spaces shared with people.
The defining feature of a cobot is not its shape or size but its safety architecture. Cobots are built with force- and torque-limiting joints, rounded edges, reduced operating speeds near people, and sensors that detect contact or proximity and stop or slow the arm accordingly. This allows them to share a workspace with humans under defined operating conditions, following a risk assessment specific to the application.
- Palletizing and depalletizing — stacking cases onto pallets or removing them, often at the end of a packing line.
- Pick assistance — a cobot arm feeds items to a human packer, or performs the picking motion while a person handles quality checks and exceptions.
- Case packing — placing items into shipping cartons at a consistent pace to smooth out fluctuations in human throughput.
- Labeling and quality inspection — applying labels or holding items steady for a vision inspection system.
Deploying cobots requires a documented risk assessment covering speed and separation monitoring, power and force limiting, and the specific end-effector attached to the arm (a gripper or suction cup can itself introduce pinch points even if the arm is inherently safe). Facility teams typically work with the equipment manufacturer to validate that the specific task, payload, and environment fall within the certified collaborative operating envelope.
Traditional industrial robotic arms are typically faster and can handle heavier payloads, but require fencing, light curtains, or other physical separation from people, along with more floor space for that separation. Cobots trade some speed and payload capacity for the ability to operate in tighter, shared spaces without full enclosures, which often makes them more practical for warehouses with limited floor space or workflows that mix automated and manual steps.
Cobots are rarely a complete automation solution on their own. They typically complement conveyor systems, AMRs, and human labor at specific bottleneck points — often the packing or palletizing stage — where a fixed-cage industrial robot would be impractical but repetitive manual labor is a strain on throughput or ergonomics.
